The grid connection is a crucial component of a renewable energy project and is regulated, among others, by the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). This law grants extensive rights to renewable energy generation facilities. The connection must be provided promptly by the grid operator, and the uptake of renewable electricity must be prioritized over other sources. If the grid cannot accommodate the planned capacity, the grid operator is obliged to expand its network. To obtain a grid connection, a system has been established in practice where a grid compatibility assessment is carried out by the grid operator after the application. The grid connection point is determined by the grid operator, who is required by the EEG to create the most economically advantageous Point of Common Coupling (PCC). This means that the sum of the connection costs of the plant operator and grid operator must be minimal. Additionally, the law grants a certain right of choice to the applicant.

In the grid connection planning, the design of electrical components such as transformers, cables, or control technology, as well as the cable route planning and installation from the generation plant to the grid connection point, are planned. Depending on the size of the project, the construction of a substation at the point of common coupling is necessary.

Holistic renewable energy projects combine various technologies such as wind turbines, photovoltaics, and storage solutions. These projects can be particularly efficient and create synergies in terms of grid connection, as the load profiles of wind and PV complement each other excellently.

1. Cable route planning

Cable route planning: Optimal route planning

Initially, cable route planning is carried out, where the optimal route is identified considering environmental, property, and technical factors. Special attention is paid to environmental protection and geographical conditions to minimize interference with nature while ensuring efficient and safe power transmission.

2. Approval process

Obtaining all necessary permits

The next step involves the approval process. This includes obtaining all necessary permits for the planned cable routes. It requires close coordination with the relevant authorities to ensure that all legal requirements are met and the route is approved.

3. Detailed planning

Precise determination of trench alignment and installation methods

Once the permits are in place, detailed planning begins. In this phase, precise plans for the trench alignment, the depth of the cables, and the installation techniques are developed. The area of intervention is defined to ensure that there is sufficient space for construction work and the required safety clearances. These detailed plans are crucial for ensuring a smooth construction process.

4. Construction phase

From trench excavation to cable laying

After the detailed planning, construction takes place. This step includes the entire cable installation, from the excavation of the trenches to the final placement of the cables. After the installation is complete, the trenches are refilled, and the original surface is recultivated.

5. Restoration

Recultivation of the area after construction

After completion of the construction work, the area is restored along the entire working width so that it can be used again for agricultural or other purposes. This ensures that the cable route work has no long-term negative impacts.
